Black Springs Golf Course is a family owned and operated business. The course is built on approx 65 acres of land purchased in 1997 and main construction of the course began in early 1999.
The course opened to the public in October 1999. At that time some of the fairways were still not fully covered, so square patches of turf were used and tee up on fairways was allowed.
A picturesque 9 hole course built around natural gums and water. Located 6.5km south of Mackay's Tourist information centre ( off the Bruce Highway in Callaway Court Bakers Creek) The licensed clubhouse is a great way to start and finish your round of golf. Visitors are most welcome.
The Early Days
The first open was hosted in November 1999 and sponsored by Crokers Fuel & Oils, who continue to sponsor the mens open every year. The opens are now held in April each year. The men’s open is held over 2 days (36 holes) and the women’s open is an 18 hole event held on the Saturday before or after the mens open.
In 1999 the club also entered the first A Grade Men’s Pennant team in Division 4. The team won 31 out of the 33 games played, promoting the team to Division 3 the next year. The A Grade Pennant team has been competitive over the years and is now maintaining a position between 1st & 2nd Division. The club now has pennants teams in Men’s B Grade and C Grade.
The course is nine holes with dual tees on numbers 2, 7 & 9. Although the course is built over fairly flat terrain, it has some picturesque and challenging holes. The fairways, covered with “Greenlees” turf, meander around a billabong, and a forest of melaleucas. The greens are covered with “Bermuda 328” and are well maintained. Water is a feature on every hole on the course. The natural waterways and man made dams provide the course with ample water, even during to the driest year.
In 2010 we opened the aqua golf driving range. This dam holds 50megs of water and has a island green in the centre that is the same dimensions as the green at Sawgrass. With the use of floating balls, you can hit your balls into the water or aim at the flag on the green, hitting off grass or mats.
Competitions are held three times a week. Vets hold there competition on Tuesdays from 9:00am. A men's competition is held on Wednesday and a mixed competition on Saturday. Both of these competitions start at 11:00 am. Black Springs is an AGU affiliated club and it offers members from any AGU club, member's rates to play in any of the competitions. Social players are welcome, with tee off available at any time outside competition times.
The club has a licensed bar and serves a variety of light foods. The club house has all outdoor seating where you can relax in the refreshing breeze while enjoying a drink and a bite to eat
